As our modern society evolves it is becoming increasingly more "important" to have some form of post secondary education. According to an article in the Queens journal Ontario University students pay an average of just under $6,000 a year, in contrast Quebec students pay an average of $2,300. The national average is $4,917, Ontario is the highest of any province by far. Last year Ontario Universities had a 5% increase in their tuition fees, again by far the largest increase in tuition was felt in Ontario. What this does is makes it impossible for deserving legitimately intelligent students to go to University, yet shall we say "less intelligent" students who come from families with money are able to attend. Personaly coming from at best a middle class family the debt that will be accrued from attending school is ridiculous. it would perhaps even be justifiable if a degree guaranteed a job, but this certainly is not the case. The Ontario government and Dalton Mcguinty argue that Ontario has the highest standard and quality of education thus why we pay more, at least from my personal experience is this is the highest quality of education I would hate to see the lesser schools. Students need to not accept this from the provincial government, at very least we should be able to get down to the national average for tuition fees. I also feel as a political science major that we are to blame for not fighting this, please follow the link for drop the fees, of course the provincial government is to blame for this but we as the educated public must not allow this to continue. Follow the link, become educated and as students perhaps we can change this injustice.

The government can say that the price is justifiable by quality but all students know the truth. The price is merely representative of supply and demand. If we, as people from Ontario, were unwilling to pay then prices would drop. Try as we might, as long as having a post secondary education is important to employers, it will be important to us. The demand will only increase and with a higher demand comes higher prices. Be happy you are in school now, because in 20 years our prices may very well rival that of American universities.
ReplyDeleteDoes that not bother you? Is it not then our place to make sure this doesnt happen, University should not only be for the wealthy
ReplyDeleteI absoloutly agree, the arguement I always here is that well we pay less than those in the States. Does that make it right? Education needs to be for people who can complete it, not just those who can afford it.
